Club lacrosse team set to begin season

Lacrosse is an unfamiliar sport in this neck of the woods. In North Dakota, there is no organized lacrosse governed by the North Dakota High School Activities Association. In Minnesota, there are less than 60 high schools that offer the sport, with none of them being close to the Fargo-Moorhead area. That isn’t stopping 15 Concordia students from starting a club team this season to compete with area schools.

Lacrosse is a unique mix of hockey, soccer, and football in which players have sticks with nets on the end and pass a ball about the size of a tennis ball in an effort to score a goal in a net about the size of an ice hockey net. It’s played on a grass field outdoors. It’s played in the NCAA and there is also a professional league, Major League Lacrosse (MLL).

The team is made up completely of Concordia students, said Concordia junior Bobby McDonald, with only five of the team members having played in high school. The guys have been working out every day, practicing throwing, and have started official practices.

Games will begin in March, and the team will play against MIAC schools St. John’s and St. Olaf, as well as area schools UND, NDSU, and MSUM. Those schools have been confirmed as opponents, but the team is looking for more games.
The team is also planning on competing in a year-end tournament, expected to be held in Fargo. A date for the tournament has not been set.
