Eat right for a healthier you
Though March is home to a host of national holidays and pastimes, Concordia has welcomed the celebration of National Nutrition Month with open arms. Since the theme of the year is “Eat Right,” Concordia’s Dining Service has taken on the role of promoting and integrating healthy choices throughout their different venues, most notably Anderson Commons.
Heather Steuven, dietetic intern in Dining Services has been working on the campaign and says that getting involved is the best way for people to get healthy.
“Learning how to ‘Eat Right’ today will benefit students and staff not only on Concordia’s campus, but in our community,” Steuven said. “Dining Services and Anderson Commons would like to get the word out there. The more the students and staff are exposed to nutrition information, the more they will practice it.”
In the past few weeks, Dining Services has teamed up with the nutrition club to present students with the opportunity to learn more about living right with events like booths promoting 5-A-Day Fruits and Vegetables, offering suggestions for healthy options eating out and portion distortion.
As a nutrition assistant, Ingrid Jorud ’09 has worked hard to publicize the nutritious mission and says Concordia has done a great job promoting nutrition and overall health, not only short term, but also long term through environmentally supportive practices.
“Just as they strive to create mentally well rounded individuals, they support the whole individual through promotion of a healthy mind, body, and spirit,” Jorud said.
Along with booths set up in Anderson Commons, Thursday nights have featured interactive programs that help teach about nutrition, what Jorud calls “the best prevention.”
“National Nutrition Month is a great opportunity for Dining Services to provide nutrition education through a series of fun activities and promotions,” said Meredith Wagner, supervisor of the nutrition assistants and preceptor for the dietetic interns. “It also allows us the opportunity to highlight the importance of nutrition as well as to educate customers about the people we have on our staff who are knowledgeable about nutrition and can assist customers with nutritional questions or concerns.”
